Why does Dickens use ghosts in A Christmas Carol?

On
Christmas Eve, right before he goes to sleep, Ebeneezer Scrooge is visited by three spirits: The
Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Future or
Christmas Yet to Come.
